Sebaceous Filaments vs Blackheads: Differences & How to Treat Them

Peer closely at your nose and chin and you'll probably see tiny dots on the skin. Most people call them blackheads — but a lot of the time they're actually sebaceous filaments, which are completely normal and need a different approach. Here's how to tell them apart, and how to keep your pores looking their clearest.

What are sebaceous filaments?

Sebaceous filaments are natural structures that line the inside of your pores and channel oil (sebum) to the skin's surface. Everyone has them, especially around the nose and chin where pores are larger. They usually look like small, uniform, grey-to-tan dots. They are not a flaw or a sign of "dirty" skin — they're part of how skin works.

What are blackheads?

A blackhead is a pore that has become clogged with a mix of oil and dead skin cells. The surface is exposed to air and oxidizes, which turns it dark. Unlike sebaceous filaments, blackheads are a type of acne, tend to look darker and more irregular, and sit slightly raised in the pore.

Sebaceous filaments vs blackheads: the quick difference

  • Sebaceous filaments: normal, everyone has them, small and uniform, grey/tan, refill naturally within days even if you clear them.
  • Blackheads: a form of clogged-pore acne, darker and more irregular, and can be cleared and prevented with a good routine.

The key thing to accept: you can't permanently "remove" sebaceous filaments — they're meant to be there and will naturally refill. The realistic goal is to keep pores clear and minimize their appearance.

How to keep pores looking clear

  1. Cleanse consistently — a gentle daily cleanse removes surface oil and debris before it builds up.
  2. Don't over-strip or over-squeeze — aggressive squeezing can damage skin and make pores look larger over time.
  3. Use a pore vacuum correctly — for loose debris and some blackheads, a low-suction pore vacuum can help when used gently (more below).
  4. Moisturize — balanced, hydrated skin looks smoother and makes pores less noticeable.

Do pore vacuums help?

A pore vacuum uses gentle suction to lift loose oil, debris and some softened blackheads from the pore surface. It won't eliminate sebaceous filaments (nothing does permanently), but used correctly it can help keep pores clearer. To use one safely:

  • Start on the lowest suction setting and test on your cheek first.
  • Keep the device moving — never hold it in one spot, which can cause temporary bruising or broken capillaries.
  • Soften skin first (a warm shower or warm compress) so debris lifts more easily.
  • Use it occasionally, not daily, and moisturize after.
  • Avoid on active, inflamed acne, rosacea-prone or very sensitive skin — check with a professional if unsure.

Frequently asked questions

Can you get rid of sebaceous filaments permanently?

No. They're a normal part of your skin and naturally refill within days. You can keep pores clear and reduce their appearance, but not remove them for good.

Are pore vacuums safe?

Used gently — low suction, kept moving, on softened skin, occasionally — they're designed for home use. Overusing or holding in one spot can cause temporary bruising. Avoid on inflamed or very sensitive skin.

How do I know if it's a blackhead or a filament?

Blackheads look darker, more irregular and slightly raised; sebaceous filaments are smaller, uniform and grey/tan. If a spot is painful, inflamed or spreading, treat it as acne and consider professional advice.
